Clinical Outcomes of Cochlear Reimplantation Due to Device Failure

چکیده
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical features of cochlear reimplantation due to device failure. METHODS The medical records of 30 patients who had undergone a revision cochlear implantation were retrospectively reviewed. Causes of revision operations, number of electrode channels inserted, and postoperative speech performances were analyzed. RESULTS Device failure (N=12, 38.7%) and hematoma (N=3, 9.6%) were the two most common reasons for revision surgery. In patients with device failure, the number of electrode channels reinserted was equal to, or more than the number of channels inserted during initial implantation. Speech performance scores remained the same, or improved after reimplantation in patients with device failure. CONCLUSION Device failure was the most common cause of revision operation in patients with cochlear implantation. Contrary to expectation, new electrodes were fully inserted without difficulty in all reimplantation cases. Intracochlear damage due to reimplantation appeared to be clinically insignificant.

INTRODUCTION Surgery for revision of cochlear implantation is an unusual but not uncommon occurrence. The purpose of this study was to discuss the major complications of cochlear implantation that we observed in 11out of 275 patients who underwent cochlear implantation in Khalili Hospital at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective analysis of 275patients w...
متن کاملSpeech Recognition Outcomes After Cochlear Reimplantation Surgery
This study compares speech recognition outcomes before and after cochlear reimplantation surgery, in relation to clinical factors known before and at time of surgery. Between 2006 and 2015, 2,055 adult cochlear implant surgeries were conducted at this center, of which 87 were reimplantation surgeries (4.2%). Speech recognition scores (SRS) assessed before and after reimplantation were available...

متن کاملExperience in cochlear reimplantation. Descriptive study of a 20-year period.
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES The cochlear implant is a surgical procedure that has increased substantially, because the paediatric population is diagnosed and implanted early and because there are increased potential indications. This device has the inherent risk of failure in performance, as dies any active medical device, which is the most common cause of implant removal. Our goal was to under...

The idea of providing hearing to profoundly deaf patients by artificially stimulating the sensory system has progressed from a futuristic possibility to reality. Generally, an implantable hearing device is designed to capture sound and present it to the auditory system, where at least part of the device is surgically implanted in the child receiving it. The goal of the implantable devices in yo...
